FAQs

We have compiled a list of the most frequent questions asked by our patients.  If your inquiry is not on the list below, please feel free to contact our office, and we will be happy to answer your questions.

What will happen at my first dental appointment?

Dr. John Heard and his team will get to know your personal health, concerns, and goals with a comprehensive exam and discussion on your first visit. The exam includes digital x-rays, an oral cancer screening, a periodontal evaluation, a bite assessment, and intra-oral photos. Dr. Heard will then discuss your current state of health with you and make recommendations based on this comprehensive evaluation. Call our office today to reserve your appointment, consultation, or second-opinion visit.

How often do I need to come in for a check-up?

Dr. John Heard recommends that patients with healthy teeth and gums schedule routine visits every six months. At these visits we will check for periodontal (gum) disease, oral cancer, decay, cracks, and inspect old dental work, as well as clean and polish your teeth. A more conservative treatment approach can often be used to correct dental problems found in the early stages. Patients with periodontal (gum) disease may need more frequent visits, which may vary depending on the condition of your mouth. Don’t delay; a small issue may become a larger dental problem if left untreated. Call our office today to schedule your next appointment.

How can I improve my smile?

Your smile is unique, and should reflect your individuality. Dr. John Heard will start with a comprehensive evaluation and consultation including your medical and dental histories. Next he will assess your existing smile and discuss your options. He may suggest whitening, crowns, porcelain veneers, composites (tooth-colored restorations), or Invisaign. For missing teeth, he may recommend dental implants, crown and bridgework or full or partial dentures. He will discuss your best options at your consultation appointment. Call our office today to schedule a consultation to improve your smile!

Should I worry that my gums bleed when I brush?

Bleeding while brushing or red, swollen gums could be a sign of periodontal (gum) disease. Early symptoms may be painless and mild, but left untreated may result in tooth loss or decay. Gum disease has also been implicated by research as a risk factor for strokes, heart disease, and diabetic or pregnancy complications. Regular check-ups can detect, treat and reverse gum disease in early stages. Contact our office today to schedule an appointment.

Will you see my children and grandparents?

As a family dental practice we welcome patients of all ages. Parents are encouraged to bring their children in for their first visit at age 3 if the child is ready (unless there is an area of concern, then bring your child earlier). This short visit will start the child on the road to a lifetime of healthy oral habits and allow the child to become comfortable during regular office visits.

Older patients benefit from regular dental visits to keep their teeth strong for chewing as they age. Dental care is an important part of overall good health and is vital to older adults. Call our office to schedule your family for their appointments today.

Do you accept referrals?

Dr. John Heard and his staff consider your referral of family and friends to our office as the highest possible compliment. We greatly appreciate your referral of family and friends and welcome all new patients. Contact our office today.
